The first ever Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge has come to a close, with Porsche Centre Oakville’s resident classic expert Nhu Nguyen taking the Porsche Passion Award home for her work on a nostalgia-dripping 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo.
Nhu was given the honour in the presence of her peers at the recent Destination Porsche event at Mont Tremblant, Quebec. The national gathering was held to cap a summer of motorsport action, celebrate the arrival of the Taycan and new 911, and recognize the exceptional work put into the Classic Restoration Challenge by all the Porsche Centres from across Canada.
As one of the leads on Porsche Centre Oakville’s “Revive. Relive. Restore.” Classic Restoration Project, Nhu oversaw the restoration of a Porsche 944 Turbo that has evoked many fond memories of the 80s.
“It was unreal,” says Nhu. “I knew who we were up against and was already feeling extremely proud to be there amongst them. To be recognized by Porsche Canada for my passion was beyond anything I imagined.”
Following the awards ceremony, which also honoured the top three restorations as well as the top marketing and technical teams working on the challenge, Nhu had the opportunity to take the 944 onto the track (the car’s first time) to run some hot laps while Porsche Cars Canada President and CEO Marc Ouayoun conducted a casual interview.
“The car did great!” says Nhu. “But I was so nervous being interviewed in the car by Marc that I missed a couple of apexes. He asked if I wanted driving instruction after that (laughs).”
Nhu says she plans to hang the award in a “place of pride” in her bedroom. The 944 Turbo, meanwhile, will remain in the Policaro family collection.
